The Web tracking event node starts an automated flow session when a recognized visitor, that is, a contact in one of your databases, visits a specific web page or runs a script on your website. You can use it to respond to a visit, an action performed on the website, or a custom event.
For the node to work, you need an active web property associated with the website and configured to recognize contacts and record the pages they visit.
How the node works
The node can start the automated flow in two ways:
- The contact visits a page whose URL matches a condition
- The contact visits a page where a script with a specific identifier runs
In both cases:
- The contact must be recognized to enter the automated flow
- The web property on the website must be active
- The web property must have the "Analyze and personalize the experience" configuration enabled or, in the case of the advanced configuration, the "Recognize and remember contacts" and "Track visitors' activities" options enabled
Web tracking events are processed after they are recorded. For this reason, the session may not appear to start immediately.
The contact visits a page
If you choose this mode, the automated flow starts when a recognized contact visits a web page whose URL matches the condition configured in the node:
- Contains...
- Starts with...
- Ends with...
- Equals...
- Matches the expression...
The comparison between the pattern specified in the node and the pattern in the URL is not case-sensitive.
For example, if you specify that the URL contains the pattern /sales, the automated flow starts whenever a contact visits a URL such as https://www.mysite.com/shop/sales/summer or https://www.mysite.com/sales.
How does it work? A technical overview
When the web property uses the "Analyze and personalize the experience" configuration, it automatically adds the page event to the pages where it is installed.
If you use the advanced configuration, enable the "Recognize and remember contacts" and "Track visitors' activities" options. This allows the web property to recognize contacts and record their visits, so the node can start the automated flow.
The "Remember anonymous visitors" option is not required in this case, but it is not a problem if it is enabled.
Alternatively, you can manually add the script that sends the page event to the pages of interest:
mna('page', {});The script is executed
If you choose this mode, the automated flow starts when a recognized contact visits a web page where a script runs and sends a trigger event with the identifier configured in the node.
For example, you can enter the identifier codeEVENT in the node and add the following script to the pages of your website where you want to send the event to magnews:
mna('trigger', {'code': 'codeEVENT'})For example, if you add the script to your e-commerce store page, the script runs when a recognized contact visits that page and the automated flow starts.
The comparison between the ID specified in the node and the value of code in the script is not case-sensitive.
In this mode, the web property does not need to use the "Analyze and personalize the experience" configuration or, in the case of the advanced configuration, have the "Track visitors' activities" option enabled, because the trigger event must be manually added to the pages of interest.
