On site messages let you show content to visitors while they browse your website. You can customize their appearance, choose when to display them, and decide which visitors should see them based on display rules and triggers.
Where to find them
You can create and manage all on site messages from:
Journey Lab > Assets > On site messages
or from within a specific Journey.
From this section, you can:
- View the list of all on site messages
- Check their status
- Create a new on site message
- Edit an existing message
- Duplicate or delete a message
When to use them
Use an on site message when you want to show content to visitors while they browse your website.
For example, you can use it to:
- Promote an offer
- Share an update
- Display an important notice
- Invite visitors to download content
- Recommend a page or product
- Show a form or call to action at the most appropriate time
You can customize the design of each message and configure it using the options available in your account, from basic settings to advanced display rules and triggers.
How they work
In most cases, these four steps are all you need:
- Create the on site message
- Customize its design and content
- Associate it with a web property and configure its settings
- Activate it
The web property connects magnews to your website and defines where the on site message associated with it can be published.
If the associated web property is already installed and active on the website, activating the on site message is enough to make it immediately available according to the display rules you configured.
If the on site message does not appear on the website after activation, the issue is usually related to the web property, display rules, or trigger configuration. See the Web Experience troubleshooting page to identify the most common issues.
On site messages or signup forms?
On site messages and signup forms use the same editor and share many features. If you are wondering which one to choose, the main difference is their purpose.
On site messages are designed to show contextual content to visitors while they browse the website, such as promotions, notices, or informational content.
Signup forms, on the other hand, are designed to acquire new contacts and manage the signup process.
If your goal is to communicate with visitors while they browse your website, use an on site message. If you want to collect new contacts in your database, learn how to create and use signup forms.
