Display rules determine who sees an on site message, how often, and under what conditions. You can combine them to show the content only to your target visitors, at the right time and on the website pages you choose.
This guide covers all available rules, organized by category, with a brief description of how each one works.
To fine-tune your strategy, you can add an unlimited number of conditions by clicking the Add rule button next to the last option you configured.
When you create an on site message, by default, it is visible to all visitors, with no limit on the number of displays and a wait time of at least 1 day between displays. After a visitor completes the form, the message is no longer shown to that visitor.
The frequency rule is set to “always, with a wait time of at least 1 day, until they respond,” while the identity rule is set to “everyone.”
Frequency rule
You can edit the frequency rule to define:
- How often to show the form: choose Always for unlimited displays, or At most and enter the maximum number of displays per visitor
- How much time must pass between displays: choose With no wait or With a wait of at least and set an interval in seconds, minutes, hours or days
- Whether to show the form after a response: choose Until they respond to stop showing it to visitors who have already completed the form, or Even after they've responded to keep showing it to both visitors who have completed it and those who have not
These options work together: if you choose Even after they've responded, the on site message continues to appear within the maximum number of displays and any wait time you configured.
Identity rule
You can also choose who sees the on site message:
- Everyone: show the on site message to all visitors, whether or not they are associated with a contact in the database
- Contacts: show it only to visitors associated with a contact in the database
- Non-contacts: show it only to visitors who are not recognized as contacts, including those who are in the database but have declined tracking
Visitor-based rules
Contact filter: create a condition that filters contacts. As shown in the image, you can also set a condition based on whether they have viewed another on site message, such as contacts who viewed "On site message 1" before a specific date.
This rule automatically excludes anonymous visitors because the filter cannot apply to them.- Belonging to audience: show an on site message only to contacts who belong to one or more selected audiences. This condition automatically excludes anonymous visitors
- Expression: enter an expression based on visitor data that determines when to show the on site message. Click Advanced mode to use the conditions available for anonymous visitors, or write an expression directly using page variables or visitor variables
- New/returning: show the on site message based on whether the visitor is visiting the page for the first time or has visited it before
- Device: show on site messages only to visitors using a desktop or mobile device
- Language: show the on site message only to contacts whose browser is set to the selected language
- Country: show the on site message only to contacts connecting from a specific country
Behavior-based rules

You can identify the pages by their URL or title - On site message interaction: show or hide the on site message based on interaction with another on site message. You can only select other on site messages from the same journey as the message you are configuring
- Origin: show the on site message based on the URL the visitor came from. You can specify an exact URL or a word that the URL must contain or start with
- Web tag (last interaction): show the on site message only to contacts who, within a specified time frame, have interacted with an object associated with one or more web tags
- Web tag (number of interactions): show the on site message only to contacts who have already interacted with an object associated with one or more web tags
- Number of visited pages: show the on site message only to visitors who have viewed a minimum number of pages, either during the session or in total
- Time on the site: show the on site message only after the configured amount of time has passed
