Learn how to make your subject unique by personalizing it with each recipient’s name and preview how it will appear.
How to set up the subject
To personalize the subject, go to the setup screen of your draft email and click Email setup.
To make the subject unique by adding each recipient’s name, click the "Insert field" icon next to the subject field.
In this new window, select or enter:
- Type, the type of information you are using; leave "Contact field" selected;
- Database, where the information is stored; leave "Global database" if the recipients’ names are saved in the platform’s "Name" field;
- Field, the information you are using for personalization; choose "Name" to insert each recipient’s name;
- Default value (optional), the text that appears if you do not have the recipient’s name (for example, "Hello" or "Good morning").
Complete the subject personalization
After clicking Insert, the subject will look like this: [contact:NAME {Hello globetrotter} encode="encodehtml"]
Square brackets "[ ]" indicate the use of a placeholder: here, "NAME" is the placeholder for the platform’s "Name" field.
Curly brackets "{ }" contain the "Default value", if specified.
After personalizing the subject with the placeholder, add the rest of the text; for example: "[contact:NAME {Hello globetrotter} encode="encodehtml"], discover our travel deals!"
Conditional subject
When you personalize the subject of your emails for different audience segments, you can do the same with the preview text.
The conditional subject lets you define rules that determine which subject recipients will see.
Conditions are checked in order, from top to bottom. For this reason, rule order is important: the first condition that evaluates as true is applied, and the following ones are not considered for that recipient.
For contacts who do not meet any condition, the default subject is shown.
In this example, we personalize the subject and preview text based on the province of residence.
- Enable the Conditional subject option
- Click the Add subject button >> Personalize the first subject
- Click the Save button
- Click the Add subject button and personalize the options by entering the subject, preview text, and condition
- Click the Save communication button
In the communication previews, for example in the “Email” card or in the summary of the send screen, both the subject and the related preview text are shown for each condition. This lets you quickly check all configured variants and get a complete view of the content that will be shown to recipients.
Preview
The Preview feature lets you see how your email will appear before sending it, including personalization with data from a contact in your database.
