The system shared field Denies consent to tracking (ID: NOTRACK) lets you manage contacts’ preferences regarding email interaction tracking.
When the field is set to Yes, magnews excludes the contact from tracking opens and clicks, while still allowing communications to be sent.
Available values
The field can take three values:
| Value | Behavior |
|---|---|
| Yes | The contact’s opens and clicks are not tracked. |
| No | The contact’s activity is tracked as usual. |
| Not set | The field’s configured default value is applied. |
What happens when the value is Yes
If the field is set to Yes:
- the contact continues to receive email communications;
- opens and clicks are handled according to the configuration defined in Contact tracking settings;
- data related to the contact’s interactions is processed according to the configured privacy preferences.
What happens when the value is No
If the field is set to No, the contact is tracked normally.
Email opens and link clicks are recorded and made available in reports and behavioral analytics.
Default value configuration
The default value of the Denies consent to tracking (ID: NOTRACK) field can be configured from the field settings.
To access the configuration, go to Profile Studio > Database management > Contact fields and open the Denies consent to tracking (ID: NOTRACK) field.
In the Type of data section you can define the field’s default value, which will be automatically assigned to new contacts in the database:
The setting is applied to new contacts unless a different value is set via forms, imports, web service calls, or automation processes.
Contact tracking with the Denies consent to tracking field
When a contact has the Denies consent to tracking (ID: NOTRACK) field set to Yes, magnews behavior depends on the setting configured in Profile Studio > Edit settings > Privacy > Contact tracking:
Two options are available:
- Record the events without making them visible to the user: opens and clicks are recorded by magnews, but they are not visible within the platform and cannot be used for segmentation, profiling, or behavioral analysis.
- Do not record events: opens and clicks are not recorded and are not stored in the system.
This setting lets you define how to handle tracking events for contacts who have expressed a preference not to be tracked.
Managing and updating tracking preferences
The Denies consent to tracking (ID: NOTRACK) field can be used to collect and manage contacts’ preferences related to tracking of email interactions.
For example, the field can be linked to:
- signup forms or profile update forms;
- Preference Center;
- sync processes with external systems.
This way the contact can express or change their preference regarding open and click tracking, while magnews will automatically apply the behavior configured for the database.
The field value can also be updated via:
- contact imports;
- web service calls;
- automation processes.
Important
The Denies consent to tracking (ID: NOTRACK) field controls only the tracking of email interactions and does not affect the ability to send communications to the contact.
A contact with tracking disabled can still receive emails, whereas an unsubscribed contact or one who has withdrawn consent will no longer receive communications for the relevant purposes.
