Post-click actions let you perform one or more operations when a contact clicks a link or button in your email. You can use them to update a contact field, send a transactional communication, or start an automated flow.
For example, you can associate an action with an “I’m interested” button to record the contact’s interest in a product category. You can then use this information to personalize future communications.
You can create actions directly in the email designer or prepare them in the Journey Lab action library and associate them with links later.
What operations can you perform?
A post-click action can include one or more operations, divided into two groups.
Edit contact
- Set a field value: sets a value in a contact field, such as an interest or preference
- Increment a number field: increases the value of a numeric field, such as an interest score
Activities
- Send transactional communication: sends the contact a transactional communication, such as a message containing the information they requested
- Run another action: runs an action that has already been configured
- Start an automated flow: starts an automation flow for the contact, such as a sequence providing more information about a product they are interested in.
You can combine multiple operations in the same action: for example, record an interest and start a dedicated automated flow.
Create an action from the email designer
- In the designer, select the button you want to associate the action with.
- In the editing panel, find Post-click actions and click the + icon.
- In the New post-click action window, enter the Name and Action ID. Choose a name that helps you identify it, such as “Record hiking interest”.
- In the Actions to perform section, click Add action.
- Choose the operation to perform, click Next, and complete the required configuration.
- Add any other operations and, if useful, an Internal note.
- Click Create action.
The action is created in the Journey Lab action library. In the button panel, check that it is selected in the Post-click actions field, then save your changes.
Use an existing action
To reuse an action that is already configured, select the button in the designer and choose the action from the Post-click actions field.
For example, if you have already created an action to record interest in a product category, you can associate it with buttons in other emails about the same category.
Create an action from the library
You can also prepare actions before working on the email.
- Go to Journey Lab > Journey management > Actions.
- Click New action.
- Enter the name and ID, and add the operations to perform.
When preparing the email, select the action in the Post-click actions field of the button you want to associate it with.
