Multilingual support in magnews lets you prepare content in multiple languages and deliver the appropriate language version to each contact.
To get started, enable multilingual support in Journey Lab.
You can then set default languages in your journeys and choose which ones to use for each asset.
Enable multilingual support
- Go to Journey Lab > Settings
- Click Edit in the upper-right corner
- In the Languages section, enable multilingual support
- Select the languages you want to use and save your changes
You can now assign languages to contacts in the language field and use those languages in your journeys and assets.
Enabling multilingual support does not automatically translate your content. For each journey and asset, you can choose which languages to use from those enabled in your account.
Set your contacts’ language
The Language field identifies each contact’s language. When creating a contact, you can select one of the available languages or leave - Undefined -, which corresponds to an empty language field.
The available languages depend on the settings in Journey Lab:
- If multilingual support is disabled, you can select only the main language for contacts
- If multilingual support is enabled, you can also select the additional languages enabled in your account
For example, if you have set Italian as the main language and added English and Spanish, you can assign one of these three languages to your contacts. You cannot assign a language that you have not enabled.
Find contacts with no language set
If you work with multilingual content, we recommend setting the Language field for every contact. Magnews can then use it to choose the content version according to each asset’s rules.
In the contact list, you can use these filters:
- Language is empty, to find contacts with no language set
- Language is not empty, to find contacts with an assigned language
If you collect new contacts through a signup page or signup form, configure the form or its actions to set the Language field during signup. This way, new contacts have a language assigned as soon as they enter the database.
Configure multilingual settings in a journey
In the settings for a specific journey, the “Default additional languages for new assets” option automatically applies additional languages to new email communications, landing pages and on site messages, so they are multilingual from the start.
If the option is enabled, the languages configured in the journey are applied to new assets that support it.
If it is disabled, the behavior depends on the asset type, but you can still change each asset’s languages after creation.
The behavior varies by asset:
- Email communications and transactional messages: if no language settings are configured in the journey, they are created without a specified language. In the setup, you can enable “Multilanguage email” and choose the main language and any additional languages
- Landing pages and on site messages: they always have a main language. If the journey option is enabled, additional languages are also proposed, and you can review or change them in the creation dialog
- Signup forms and service pages: the creation dialog shows only the main language, with no additional languages, regardless of the journey option. Add other languages if you want to make them multilingual
For example, if you have enabled default additional languages for new assets in the journey and configured Italian and English, a new communication is automatically created with both languages. You can still add other languages enabled in your account or remove those proposed by default.
Configure and translate individual assets
Choose the asset you want to make multilingual and follow the guide to configure its languages and translate the content:
You can also customize default messages, such as those indicating that a required field has been left blank, and edit them in the languages enabled in your account.
